Sketchbooks

As an artist in the hills, I interact directly with the landscape, looking rather than seeing. I rely on close observations of the landscape, whether a rock face or a mountain ridge, to find the right line.

I am always looking for how I can express the essence of the landscape. It is essential to get right into the mountains, sometimes into difficult places, to find the best sites to make my drawings. For me it is a dialogue between the eye and the hand, an accommodation between the objective reality and my subjective experience of the mountain world - a personal interrogation which expresses my relationship with the wild places.

My sketchbooks are the essential starting point in my creative practice. My drawings are the basis for my original work in the studio and print workshop.
